Common Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.) - Small

Common Bristlenose Plecos are hardy, peaceful freshwater catfish known for their mottled brown coloration, compact size, and distinctive facial bristles that become especially prominent on mature males. Their manageable adult size and natural grazing behavior make them a popular choice for community aquariums.

Bristlenose Plecos are generally peaceful but may become territorial with other bottom-dwelling fish, particularly other plecos competing for caves or preferred hiding places. Providing multiple caves, driftwood, and separate resting areas helps minimize territorial behavior.

Feed a varied diet of quality algae wafers and vegetable-based sinking foods supplemented with fresh vegetables such as zucchini, squash, green beans, and cucumber. Occasional protein-rich foods can also be offered, but their diet should remain primarily plant-based.

Common Bristlenose Plecos are excellent grazers and will consume algae and biofilm throughout the aquarium, but they should still receive regular supplemental feeding and should not be expected to survive on algae alone.

Provide clean, well-oxygenated water with good filtration and regular water changes. Driftwood is highly recommended for grazing and enrichment, along with caves and shaded hiding areas where the fish can rest during the day.

Common Bristlenose Plecos are compatible with most peaceful community fish with similar water requirements. When keeping multiple plecos, provide at least one cave per fish plus additional hiding places to reduce competition.

Please note: Bristlenose Plecos are cave spawners. Mature males develop more prominent facial bristles and typically claim a cave, where they guard the eggs and developing fry after spawning.
