L519 Honeycomb Pleco (Ancistomus sp. L519)

L519 Honeycomb Plecos are attractive, relatively small plecos known for their intricate honeycomb-like patterning and warm brown-to-golden coloration. Their unusual markings, manageable adult size, and generally peaceful nature make them an appealing choice for community aquariums and dedicated pleco setups.

L519s are usually peaceful but may become territorial with other bottom-dwelling fish, particularly other plecos competing for caves and preferred hiding places. Providing several caves and visual barriers helps reduce competition.

Care Information

  • Adult Size: Approximately 4–5 inches
  • Minimum Tank: 20 gallons, with larger tanks recommended for groups
  • Temperature: 76–82°F
  • pH: Approximately 6.0–7.5
  • Temperament: Peaceful to mildly territorial
  • Diet: Omnivore
  • Tank Level: Bottom

Feed a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets and wafers supplemented with vegetable-based foods and protein-rich options such as frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp. They may graze on algae and biofilm, but should not be purchased primarily as an algae-control fish.

Provide clean, well-oxygenated water with good filtration and regular water changes. Driftwood, rockwork, caves, and shaded hiding areas allow them to establish territories and display natural behavior.

L519s can be kept with most peaceful community fish with compatible water requirements. When keeping several plecos together, provide at least one appropriately sized cave per fish plus additional hiding places to minimize territorial disputes.

Please note: L519s are cave-spawning plecos. Mature males may claim caves and become more territorial when preparing to breed.
